Let me, at the outset, congratulate you for the establishment of School of Global Leadership, Renmin University of China and wish the new School all success!
I just attended the "Tongzhou Global Development Forum" hosted by Renmin University of China in Beijing. Once again I felt the efforts – and achievements - of Renmin University of China, as a top China’s university, in the communication with the world.
The establishment of the School of Global Leadership is a major initiative of Renmin University of China, promoting the rise of a university at the global level.
Over the past ten years, I have learned more and more about Renmin University of China, mainly through cooperation and exchanges with Chongyang Institute for Financial studies. This is the first modern university built by the CPC. It was born in the war in the revolutionary era of 1937.
Now, today, many years later, it is the best university in China in humanities and social sciences studies. It has been contributing much wisdom and talent to the CPC's national governance.
Today, China continues to rise as a global leader. This is the right time for Renmin University of China to build a global leadership school, to cultivate talents aiming at global leadership, and to develop excellence in communication between China and the world.
A global power must have at least one – and preferably several -global leadership academic institutions. In the United States, the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University is a typical example. Through the cultivation and exchange of global talents, the School - together with other universities made an essential contribution to the world leadership of the United States after World War II.
Many countries around the world the leading universities cultivate academic excellence and penetrating research needed for global leadership. They communicate among themselves, they compare their academic methodologies and their achievements.
All this contributes to their global leading roles. Moreover, this also contributes to their constant improvement of quality of both, teaching and research.
From this perspective, I believe that the School of Global Leadership of Renmin University of China has the right potential.
Today, on this special occasion, I take the liberty to suggest three points that I hope that will be helpful for the future development of the Global Leadership Academy:
First, the need to have a global perspective. This school should have both Chinese and global characteristics. It should cultivate students' international perspectives and communication skills, invite students from all over the world, and have faculty from around the world.
Second, the need to look to the future. This school is committed to cultivating talents and seeking solutions to address the unprecedented challenges facing the world today. It must not only focus on the need to resolve political, economic, and other problems arising from the competition among major powers.
It must also contribute to finding solutions to non-traditional crises such as the consequences of climate change, the prevention of health emergencies and promotion of constructive use of artificial intelligence.
Third, we need to focus on innovation. I believe that this school is different from traditional colleges in that it needs to innovate in terms of talent cultivation and operational mechanism.
In conclusion, I would like to congratulate you on the establishment of the School of Global Leadership, Renmin University of China. I shall be happy to continue to contribute to the development of this school.
I wish the School of Global Leadership, Renmin University of China all success.
And I thank you for your attention.
