I believe South China sea will be a testing ground for the future of the US China geopolitical relationships.Will it be a rivalry, strategic rivalry, or competition within a rule based framework, or corporation.It will be a test since the US brought South China sea into the great power competitions to teach rivalry from 2010 onwards. It is uncertain if efforts by China and ASEAN countries to build a rule based framework in South China sea through code of conduct, renegotiations.
