It was also an occasion for bilateral meetings that proved fruitful. He met Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on the sidelines, and they expressed a desire to further expand their cooperation in different fields.
Xi also had a meeting with the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He struck a perfect chord when he mentioned the current premier`s father, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, who reached out to China 45 years ago to establish bilateral diplomatic ties. The Canadian Prime Minister was delighted and invited Xi to make a visit. The two leaders also agreed to promote economic, political and cultural ties.
President Xi was also received by Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan. It was an important chance for them to discuss economic and security relations. China has some reservations about Turkey due to concerns that some of the militants and their supporters involved in anti-state activities in Xinjiang had found refuge in Turkey. Hopefully, increasing bilateral trade and commitment to deepen defense ties will improve the political atmosphere.
The Chinese leader also attended a meeting of the BRICS nations, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, assuring his colleagues China was ready to share its experiences and growth dividends with emerging countries. He also urged them to strengthen confidence in growth. "Pure gold fears no fire," Xi said, a reference to self-confidence considered vital for private and public success.
His discussions and meetings show his abiding interest in the economic well-being of the world. The G20 group was the right forum for him as it accounts for around 85 percent of global GDP, 80 percent of world trade, and two-thirds of the human population. China being the largest nations and fastest developing country has shown openness to provide support to both developing and the developed countries.
The multilateral setting at the Turkish Mediterranean coastal city of Antalya in the southwest provided a platform for productive meetings of President Xi, whose country will hold the rotating G20 presidency in 2016, with the summit due to take place in the eastern city of Hangzhou.
