Africa makes up an important part in China`s Belt and Road initiative. African countries will benefit from increased connectivity brought by the plan. China plans the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, as a route linking Europe, Asia and Africa through the sea. It views Kenya`s two ports, Mombasa and Lamu, as important links to expand trade and connectivity with the African continent.

Over the past few years, Beijing has been advocating an increase in exchanges among African countries, as well as their interaction with China. It is estimated that China`s total investment on the continent surpassed US$240 billion in 2014. And that number is increasing by an average of 16 percent each year.

The major focus of Chinese investment is on infrastructure, especially building networks of railways, highways and regional aviation. Other investment areas include the energy sector and manufacturing industry.
