To honor foreigners who have made contributions to sharing Chinese culture with the world and promoting communication between Chinese and foreign civilizations, the Awarding Ceremony of the 16th Special Book Award of China was held in Beijing on June 14, 2023. Twenty writers, translators and publishers from 16 countries received the award, including Mr. John Marshall Ross, who is a senior fellow at the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China (RDCY).

Organized by the National Press and Publication Administration since 2005, the government award is a top publication prize that honors foreigners for making great contributions to the introduction and promotion of China, Chinese culture and Chinese publications to the world. So far 188 writers, translators and publishers from 62 countries have won the award.

John Marshall Ross is a British writer and renowned scholar. He is a Senior Fellow of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies of the Renmin University of China, and the former Director of Economic and Business Policy for the Mayor of London. He has studies China for many years, and has written numerous articles on China’s economy and its relation to the world economy. He established a personal website, Learning from China, to express his opinions and analyses about Chinese development. Don't Misread China's Economy and The Great Chess Game? A New Perspective on China’s Destiny are his representative masterpieces.

John Ross who researches world economy didn’t believe the Western mainstream economics. That’ how Ross started to study China. At first, he studied the Soviet economy, gradually discovering its structural crisis but with no evidence. The success of the Chinese economy after the reform and opening up in 1978 gave him new inspiration. The book Why the economic reform succeeded in China & will fail in Russia? received unprecedented attention. Since then, he officially studied the Chinese economy. He was appointed by the Mayor of London to make London's economic policy and began to learn China in 2000. He first visited China in 2005 and taught in China in 2009. He was the first foreign senior fellow in RDCY in 2013. On September 29, 2014, at the critical moment of the "Occupy Central" in Hong Kong, Ross, as a British person, published a micro blog to criticize the hypocritical reports of Western media, which aroused the attention and support of public opinion at home and abroad.

Over the past three decades, Mr. John Ross has visited Europe, Russia and China many times, wrote over 200 articles on the Chinese economy and its social development published in English, Chinese, Spanish and Russian. Part of his opinions have been viewed more than 100 million and forwarded millions. His work has been published in English, Chinese, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Russian and Portuguese. He is also a commentator for China Daily, Xinhuanet, Global Times and Guancha.cn. The book "Don't Misread China's Economy" published at the end of 2018, was included in the key theme publication of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee.

Mr. John Ross is a resident columnist for ‘Opinion Leaders’ on Sina Finance, China.org.cn, and Guancha.cn. Over 1.1 million followers on his Sina Weibo(@JohnRoss431). He communicates with Chinese experts in WeChat, and unveils the disadvantages of Western economy in Twitter. In 2020, he joined to launch the "No Cold War" campaign with a group of people of insight around the word, calling on the United States to abandon the Cold War mentality, which has received huge international response. As a foreign scholar who has passed the age of 70, he always believes that "China has not only made the greatest economic achievements in the world, but also gradually formed the most advanced economic thought in the world". He tirelessly contributes his wisdom to it, and tells the story of China to the world.
