The 2023 Tongzhou Global Development Forum is underway in Beijing. The 3-day event focuses on "Development as the Solution, Globe as the Platform for Development". You Yang reports.

International delegates gathered in Beijing to discuss global development. In a world faced by profound challenges including climate change and geopolitical crises, attendees agreed that the public good should be a priority in development efforts.

ADRIAN NASTASE, Former Prime Minister of Romania "It is important to deepen development with international peace and security."

SHAHBAZ KHAN, UNESCO representative in China "This is a very high-quality forum."

A report by conference host Renmin University calls for the international community to remain committed to a people-centred approach to global development. It says innovation-driven development could create new opportunities.

LIN SHANGLI, President, Renmin University of China "We are here to set up a platform to hear opinions from scholars and experts around the world and to discuss the full implementation of the 'Global Development Initiative', 'Global Security Initiative', 'Global Civilization Initiative' put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping."

The APEC Leaders' Summit in San Francisco and the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden were discussed at the conference. Attendees believe the talks show signs of improved communication between the world's two largest economies.

CUI TIANKAI, Former Chinese Ambassador to the US "I believe Chinese President Xi Jinping has been sending out a consistent message that in order to realize the healthy, stable, sustainable development of relations between China and the United States, both sides should adhere to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation."

BENJAMIN NORTON, Founder and Editor-in-Chief, "Geopolitical Economy Report" "A lot of people in the United States agree, I certainly agree as an American that win-win cooperation should be the way that the world organizes the trade and investment patterns. It makes perfect sense why does one country have to benefit at the expense of another country why can they not both benefit."

YOU YANG, Beijing "Participants at the 2023 Tongzhou Global Development Forum agree that, as the world undergoes unprecedented changes, pursuing development is deemed the fundamental solution to cope with these challenges. They vow to focus on development while jointly building a community with a shared future for mankind. You Yang, CGTN, Beijing."
