Chairman of Eurasia Group visited RDCY

2024-07-26

On July 3 2024, the chairman of Eurasian Group Mr. Cliff Kupchan visited Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China (RDCY). He had in-depth exchanges with thse Chinese experts and scholars about the current world conditions, the global economies, and China-US relationship. In addition, Mr. Cliff Kupchan delivered a speech entitled “Geopolitical Trends and US-China Relations”at the recently newly opened RDCY Forum for Area Studies, U.S. Series. This was another exchange after Kupchan had become the first American scholar in delivering a speech in RDCY on June 25, 2023 after the COVID-19.

Executive Dean of RDCY, Prof. Wang Wen warmly welcomed Kupchans visit to RDCY for exchange. Wang Wen thinks that the China-US relationship has not only become increasingly important, but also more and more subtle, and promoting more cultural exchanges and dialogues between the two countries, as well as enhancing mutual understanding, has become the essence.

Later when delivering a public speech, Cliff Kupchan stated that the China-US relationship has entered an“mitigation period” after the San Francisco meeting of the two heads. He mentioned that when he had visited China a year ago, the connections between the two countries were almost suspended. However, at present the communication and dialogue between the two countries in military, diplomatic, cultural and other fields have gradually resumed, and uncertainty has been effectively alleviated.

Kupchan talked through the recent US election, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the artificial intelligence and climate crisis. He stressed that the management of AI is one of the utmost issues to be resolved by humanity, in which China and US should strengthen their effective communication. He also noted that the climate change is another important issue facing mankind, although China and US have emphasized strengthening cooperation to address the climate crisis, there has been little substantive progress and effective results.

In the Q&A session, the audience and Kupchan had an in-depth exchange on topics such as the US election and domestic political trends, the global economy, the debt crisis, regional conflicts, and green transformation.
