Dr. Malena presented papers in symposia organized by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the China Center for Contemporary World Studies, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, the Beijing Language and Culture University, as well as the National Defense University (Washington DC). Member of the World Association of China Studies, and the World Sinologists Council. 

In the year 2013 he received the "Special Book Award of China" for his book "China: the building of a big power", which was translated to Chinese and published by the China Intercontinental Press in the year 2017. 

His studies on China began in the late 1970s, when as a teenager lived in Beijing (1979-1982) and started to learn the language, culture and history of China.
