Peter Hediger, a native from Basel, Switzerland, has been trained as a sinologist, historian, and international security policy expert. He is an independent senior analyst on Chinese and East Asian security policy issues and consultant.

He is the first Swiss to get a Master’s degree from a regular course in ancient Chinese history at the prestigious National Taiwan University in Taipei (1981). He also holds a diploma as an international security policy expert from the Geneva Center for Security Policy (1988).

In his civilian career he joined the Department of Defense, Protection of Population, and Sports (Swiss Ministry of Defense) and became a senior analyst for defense and security policy issues of China and of the Asia Pacific region (1986-1999).

Parallel to his civilian achievements, he pursued the career of a militia officer in the Swiss Army. He gained first-hand international peacekeeping experience on a mission with the Swiss Delegation to the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission for the Armistice in Korea at Panmunjom (1982-1983). Promoted to Colonel, his last two assignments culminated in the position of the Swiss Defense Attaché first in China and then in Japan with side accreditations to D.P.R.K., Mongolia, and Singapore, and R.O.K., Indonesia, and Thailand respectively (1999-2008).

In June 2008 he has retired from civil and military service and continues to do research on defense and security policy issues in China and the Asia Pacific region. On various occasions and venues in Switzerland and abroad, he has been lecturing on related topics. Regular lectures he has delivered at an MBA program at the Federal Technical University (ETH) in Zürich as well as at courses for senior military officers at the Swiss Military Academy. He has organized and guided tailored group travels for academicians and business leaders to China and North Korea. Occasionally he has published articles in Swiss and Chinese media. Furthermore, he works as an independent senior consultant.
