Mariana Escalante

She is a full-time professor at the Center for International Relations, Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She holds a PhD in Political and Social Sciences from UNAM and a Master’s degree in International Relations from Peking University, in the Chinese-language program. She completed two research stays in China: the first from 2008 to 2009 as part of the China–Mexico City Scholarship Program of the UNAM Center for Chinese-Mexican Studies, and the second at Peking University from 2010 to 2013. 

She is a member of the National System of Researchers and part of the Eurasia Studies Group. Her research interests include Chinese foreign policy, nationalism, Confucianism, contemporary Chinese society, and mutual perceptions between China and Mexico. 

She is the author of Nationalism and Confucianism in Contemporary China (2024, UNAM/Orfila-Valentini). She is also co-editor of the books Half a Century of Mexico–China Diplomatic Relations: Contexts, Analytical Approaches, Economy, Trade, and New Agendas, (2025, El Colegio de México) and Asian Perspectives: New Concepts for International Relations (2025, UNAM).
