Dr. María del Pilar Álvarez is a researcher at CONICET (the Argentine National Scientific and Technical Research Council), a professor, and a member of the Interdisciplinary Program in Chinese Studies at the National University of San Martín. She also teaches at the University of Salvador (USAL) and serves as a visiting professor at the T. Di Tella University (UTDT). Her research focuses on women's human rights in East Asia, particularly those related to women's rights in the context of armed conflict.
For over 20 years, she has specifically researched "comfort women" in East Asia, and her latest book on this topic was published by Penguin Random House. It is the first book on this subject in Spanish. For her work, she was awarded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea. Additionally, she has published more than 25 academic articles in indexed journals on women's human rights in East Asia, authored two books, and edited five others.
Her current research focuses on how to educate about and commemorate the violence inflicted on women's bodies during armed conflicts, comparing the events in China during the anti-imperialist war against Japan with those in Argentina. In particular, she is interested in linking memory politics, museums, and education related to women’s human rights in both China and Argentina.
