China has introduced a new national guideline to promote high-quality urban development, shifting the focus from rapid expansion to sustainable, people-centered growth.
The document, issued by the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council, lays out overall requirements, main goals, and key tasks.
China's urbanization rate has risen from 53 percent in 2012 to 67 percent in 2024, with the urban population reaching 940 million.
The guideline says urbanization is entering a new stage, shifting from rapid expansion to improving quality and efficiency.
By 2030, significant progress is expected in building modern, livable, green, and resilient cities.
