A Chinese surveying team reaches the summit of Mt. Qomolangma on May 27, 2020. In order to pay tribute to the brave climbers, we shared the mountaineering experience and thoughts of Wang Wen, Executive Dean of Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies of Renmin University of China (RDCY) , who had reached the top of Asia, Europe and Africa. This article is based on the author's experience after climbing to the top of Kilimanjaro in February 2019.
The author reached the Peak Jaya, the highest peak in Oceania in May 2019.
Exploration is still a minority sport in China. The number of Chinese traveling in the Mount Kilimanjaro is far less than that of Chinese in the tourist resorts such as Paris, Tokyo and Los Angeles. According to an incomplete statistics, there are about 40 thousand people who ascend to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, of which roughly 200 to 300 are Chinese.
The concept of outdoor mountaineering exploration for Chinese has just become popular in recent years. For the exploration activity, China lags behind the world for more than a hundred years. Since the 18th century, Europeans and Americans have taken the lead in discovering and climbing most of the world's summits, and their technical level of mountaineering is far ahead of that of the Chinese, creating national records and pride in the history of human exploration.
The author reached the summit of Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa in February 2019.
After the World War II, with the rapid economic development of East Asia, Japanese and Koreans gradually dabbled in the field of mountaineering exploration, representing the awakening of the spirit of Asian mountaineering exploration, while the Chinese have only just begun in the recent years. And Chinese society has not generally realized that mountaineering is a great combination of individual intelligence, physical strength, financial resources, perseverance and technology, reflecting the overall national strength of each country. The more powerful the country is, the more climbers there are.
The author reached the Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe in August 2019.
The spirit of exploration is the great energy contained in the depths of human genes. At present, the new era of exploration for mankind is beginning. If we consider the current situation, we can find that lack of exploration culture imposes blockades on the development of our country. Therefore, If we want to open up the future development, we need to continue to inspire more people and rekindle their spirit of exploration. In this regard, Chinese people should strive to catch up with the pace of the world.
