The gathering at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum warns of a "new reality" in the global landscape with developing countries feeling the brunt. But the relationship between China and Russia has been earmarked as one positive during challenging times. CGTN's Sun Ye has more.

The pandemic that continues to roil much of the world is setting the tone for discussions about a "new reality" in St. Petersburg.

WANG WEN Executive Dean, Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies Renmin University of China "Even as many countries are actively planning for or moving into a post-pandemic situation, vaccine production and distribution, as well as preventive measures, remain issues that need addressing. And no one will be spared the complexity that comes with attempts to revive their domestic economy."

It could be a reality particularly harsh for developing nations, including some BRICS nations.

Wang says this could make it harder for the group of emerging economies to find its collective voice, especially compared to when he last went to the St. Petersburg forum in 2019.

But he says there are constants in the new world landscape.

WANG WEN Executive Dean, Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies Renmin University of China "The China-Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership is unbreakable. Especially with President Xi Jinping and President Putin's stewardship, relations between China and Russia have grown stronger over the past eight years. The world is changing, but as we look at the fundamentals, the bond is like going upstairs – it only ever goes up. It's the epitome of great-power relations."

SUN YE Beijing "This year marks the 20th anniversary of the signing of the China Russia Friendship Agreement. And as both emerge from the pandemic, bilateral trade volume picked up more than ten percent for the first quarter of 2021. SY, CGTN, BJ."
