On April 2-4, a delegation of Renmin University of China (RUC) went to Washington, D.C., and met with more than 30 top-class experts and business people from American well-known think tanks including Brookings Institute, Wilson Center, Congressional Research Service (CRS), Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE), Heritage Foundation, Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University (SAIS). The series events aim to make a survey research on the upcoming meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on April 6, “Belt and Road” forum for international cooperation in May and long-term Sino-US relations.

A generally accepted view of American think tanks is that the President Trump has no clear strategy on China, and what he claimed during the campaign such as “trade war with China” and “currency manipulator” can not be conducted after he took office. However, Trump is still in the process of learning. His view is changing on China-proposed “Belt and Road Initiative” and other issues. Therefore it is more important for the Xi-Trump summit that it gives a chance for them to understand each other than the substantive promotion.

Through the research, the survey group attempts to help Chinese view the Xi-Trump summit in the long-term perspective and treat it more rationally. Meanwhile, the survey group hopes that Chinese society could keep an open mind to cooperate with US and strengthen the communication and dialogue with American think tanks and social elites, so that solid foundation of Sino-US relations could be established.
