As China-US relation increasingly escalates, an international online meeting themed “A new cold war against China is against the interests of humanity” voluntarily organized by activists and scholars from 48 countries was broadcast on Zoom, Youtube and Facebook simultaneously on July 25th, 2020. Well-known scholars from China, the United States, Britain, India, Russia, Canada, Venezuela, Brazil and other countries participated and called on the United States to abandon the cold war mentality. Internet users in more than 50 countries and regions watched the global and highly realistic live broadcast, with news reports and related content being read by about 200 million people, sparking heated discussions around the world.

Shortly after the live broadcast, a press release issued by the Global Times for this event, named as "Last night when you were asleep, scholars from 48 countries warned the United States" hit the web. On the second day, the wechat id of People’s Daily reposted this news. The attractive headline and the recent high public concern about China and the United States led to the two articles being read by more than 100,000 people on both media platforms, becoming a hot spot that day. Subsequently, CCTV, Ecns.cn, Guancha.cn, China Daily, youth.cn, NetEase, Tencent, Ifeng.com and other media republished the report of this live broadcast. A micro-topic discussion of #48CountryScholarsWarnsU.S.# initiated by the Global Times has reached 82.82 million views on Toutiao's headlines (as of midnight on July 28), and many internet celebrities (named big V in Chinese) participated in this topic discussion, topping the Toutiao’s hot list at 6:47 am on July 27. The related video and reports about this event have been viewed and read extensively on the internet.

Media from neighboring Asian countries have also paid close attention to this report. Zaobao, a Singapore newspaper published a copy of the event on the morning of July 27 under the headline "China's official media: scholars from 48 countries urged the United States not to launch a new Cold War". In addition, Sin Chew Daily, the most influential media in Malaysia, also carried a report combining information from Beijing.

The English websites of Xinhua and China Daily respectively published articles entitled “U.S. aggressive attitude to China threatens world peace: scholars” and “Avoid Cold War for sake of humanity, analysts urge”, repeated the view of experts who attended the meeting of “A New Cold War against China is against the interests of humanity”.

Meanwhile, the organizers of the event tweeted the hashtag #No to the New Cold War. Hua Chunying, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman, and one of the founders of the "No to the New Cold War" initiative, John Ross, Former Director of Department of Economy and Business Policy in London, and Senior Fellow of Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China (RDCY), CGTN Europe and other accounts discussed this topic on Twitter and retweeted RDCY’s Twitter account’s report on this international online meeting. The Qiao Collective and Popular Resistance, social organizations with more than 20,000 Twitter followers, have also retweeted their opposition to the new Cold War. In addition to Twitter, foreign social media such as Facebook and YouTube also had a heated discussion about this event.

The video of this event has been forwarded by multiple accounts on YouTube, and the number of on-demand has been on the rise. In the comment area, global users have also exchanged warmly and left positive comments and interactions. Scholars and activists also jointly issued a statement “A New Cold War against China is against the interests of humanity”, which has been translated into 17 languages, including Chinese, English, French and Russia.

On July 27th, 2020, at a regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the spokesperson Wang Wenbin fought back against reporters’ question about the US slandering the Chinese Consulate General in Houston for illegal activities and even espionage. He forcefully retorted, “If it wants to blame others, it will always find excuses to justify its acts.” Then he mentioned the joint statement issued by experts and scholars from 48 countries. “On July 25, experts and scholars from 48 countries held a conference and issued a joint statement, which says ‘We note the increasingly aggressive statements and actions being taken by the US government in regard to China. These constitute a threat to world peace...We therefore believe that any New Cold War would run entirely counter to the interests of humanity...We support China and the US basing their relations on mutual dialogue and centering on the common issues which unite humanity.’" He ended this press conference with this excerpt. In the evening of the same day, the official Weibo of the foreign ministry spokesperson about the regular press conference released an article titled "Wang Wenbin: If it wants to blame others, it will always find excuses to justify its acts", which was read by more than 270,000 people.

John Ross, Senior Fellow of RDCY, published an article entitled “We take actions to oppose a New Cold War” in the Global Times on July 27th, telling more stories behind this meeting. He said that "The opposition to a new Cold War is a key task of diplomacy between countries. It also requires a broader understanding of these issues that concern China, the United States and the world. It is necessary to inform everyone of this truth, and as part of this process that this meeting is of great significance."

CCTV also paid close attention to this meeting. On the evening of July 27th, on “Relativity” program, Wang Wen, the only Chinese think tank scholar spoke at the meeting, had an exclusive dialogue with two Houston Chinese. The program was broadcasted simultaneously on CCTV news client, Weibo, Tiktok, Kuaishou, Toutiao, bilibili, Baidu and Tencent News, as well as takungpao.com and Wenweipao in Hong Kong, and detonated the whole network.

CCTV news reporter Zhuang Shengchun began the program by dictating the content of the joint statement and the remarks made by Wang Wen, Executive Dean of RDCY. During the dialogue, Wang Wen thought that the Trump administration can do anything to win the election, which will have an impact on the launch of a new Cold War. At the same time, he said that there are three aspects to explain the decline of the threat of the new Cold War: first, China's national power and influence is rising; second, the strength of the United States is weakening; third, global public opinion wants peace and development, and no one wants to see the United States launch a new Cold War. Then Wang Wen spoke to the two Huston Chinese online and said that he also didn’t predicted what had happened in Huston and the next three months would be a high-risk period for Sino-US relations. The US is diverting American’s attention from the failure in fighting against the pandemic by provoking China. He also expressed his sympathy to the two Chinese citizens.
