The US has to share the world with China and other countries, says journalist and scholar Martin Jacques in an interview with People's Daily reporter He Jieqiong.

Jacques is a former senior fellow at the Cambridge University department of politics and international studies and author of When China Rules the World: The Rise of China and the Decline of the West.

In the interview, Jacques shares his understanding of China’s common prosperity initiative, which he calls “a new stage of China’s modernization.”

With inequality a common challenge for both China and Western countries, China is addressing the issue while the West is doing little, Jacques says.

Jacques says Western attitudes to China's rise have changed from seeing the country as an “opportunity” to seeing it as a “threat” over the years. In his opinion, this latest stage will last at least two decades.

“The US has to come to recognition that China is here to stay, it is different and the relationship must be based on mutual respect and equality,” he says. “The US has to come to understand that it is no longer in that No.1 position. It has to share the world with China and other countries.”
