COAST REGION: CCM Secretary General, Dr Asha Rose Migiro has officially launched Masters and PhD degree programmes in Governance for the 2025/2026 academic year at Mwalimu Nyerere Leadership School (MJNLS) in Kibaha, Coast Region.

These programmes will be jointly offered by the MJNLS and the Renmin Global Leadership School of China.

Dr Migiro, who also serves as Chairperson of the School’s Board of Trustees, described this initiative as an extension of the long-standing friendship between Tanzania and China, as well as the strong ties between CCM and the Chinese Communist Party (CPC).

“These two parties have a rich history of friendship that has brought positive changes to both sides. Today’s event marks another important milestone in this enduring relationship,” she said during her opening remarks.

Dr Migiro also expressed Tanzania’s preparedness for the upcoming General Election, assuring that all necessary measures are in place to ensure peace before, during and after the polls.

Welcoming the Secretary General, former Prime Minister Mr Mizengo Pinda, who is also Chairperson of the MJNLS Governing Board, called for increased focus on youth development through training programmes aimed at grooming future leaders.

Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Chen Mingjian, reiterated China’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Tanzania by sharing expertise and experiences in various development sectors.

“China is dedicated to sharing advancements in technology, particularly in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to support Tanzania and other African countries in modernising commerce, industry, trade and increasing productivity,” she noted.

Dean of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University, Professor Wang Wen described Renmin University as one of China’s premier institutions with a history dating back to 1937. He said that the new programmes have been carefully crafted to meet regional needs.

During the event, both Renmin University Chairman, Professor Zhang Donggang and University President, Lin Shamgli, sent their greetings via video call, pledging to continue fostering the partnership with MJNLS.

MJNLS Principal, Professor Marcelina Chijoriga said the school has enjoyed a strong relationship with Renmin University and that launching these degree programmes marks a significant step forward.

“A total of 32 students from the six member countries of the school, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia and South Africa will begin these courses. Ten students will pursue PhD degrees while 22 will study for their Master’s,” she explained.

Prof Chijoriga added that this marks the beginning of a new chapter for MJNLS, which previously offered only short courses since its establishment in 2022.
